Född 1892, började inom nöjesbranschen redan som femåring och lanserades som "babyvampen" (lite sjukt). Vid 14 års ålder uppträdde hon i revyer på Broadway och 1926 skrev hon pjäsen Sex som orsakade stor skandal och till slut sedan stoppades. Hon anklagades för obscenitet och fick tillbringa 10 dagar i fängelse.
Filmdebuten ägde rum 1932 i Natt efter natt. I Hollywood blev hon förebilden för sexsymbolen - litet mullig, otroligt vulgär, gäckfull och utstyrd. Hon skrev själv manus till de flesta av sina filmer.
